"Fuel for Thought plays a vital role in helping our students thrive—on and off the field. When kids are well fed, they focus better, learn more, and grow into the leaders we know they can be."

STUDENT SUCCESS STORIES

Carl Van Rensberg

“Carl was in our very first class in 2011. He graduated from the school we partnered with back then. Today, he teaches Grade 7 at that same school and coaches their first team football squad. It’s especially meaningful for me—he now coaches my son and serves as a strong male role model in his life. Carl's stable income has allowed him to build a life for himself and make a lasting difference for kids from similar backgrounds."

Alex Van Schalkwyk

"Alex’s story reflects the heart of what we strive for at Ubuntu. When he joined us, he couldn’t afford to attend a quality school—so we helped place him in a solid government school where he could thrive. From there, his path took off. He earned a postgraduate year at Northwood Boarding School in New York, then went on to attend Dartmouth College. Today, he lives in San Francisco and works at a prestigious investment firm. Alex’s journey—from a township in South Africa to the Ivy League and beyond—shows what’s possible when young people are given the opportunity to rise."

Vusumzi Plamana

"Vusumzi's journey is a powerful testament to resilience and opportunity. Orphaned at nine, he went to live with his aunt in a local township. It was there that he was scouted and joined the Ubuntu Academy, where his talent and determination quickly stood out. He represented South Africa in multiple matches for the U17 national team and excelled on the field—but ultimately, he chose to prioritize his education. Vizumzi earned a scholarship to North Carolina State University, graduating this past December. Now, he’s pursuing his MBA at Meredith College and preparing to launch his professional career. His story reminds us what’s possible when talent is met with support and belief."
